Most domain checkers guess from DNS, which says a name is taken the moment anyone points a record at it. Untaken asks the registry instead: it finds the authoritative one through IANA, queries it over RDAP or WHOIS, and only falls back to DNS where a registry publishes no lookup at all.
How it works
- Finds each extension's official registry through IANA, then queries it over RDAP, falling back to WHOIS
- Reads the registration record itself, so an unregistered name is reported as available rather than inferred
- Falls back to DNS only where a registry has no public lookup, and says so
- AI can propose names from a description of what you are building, and every suggestion is checked against the same registry data
- Cleans up whatever you paste, whether that is a bare name or a full URL
